Beneath the shadow of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cascades Female Factory is the best place to connect with the lesser-known stories of Australia’s female convicts. From 1828–1853 thousands of women and children were imprisoned here; many never left. Joining a guided tour brings the stories of this challenging but very special place to life. Tours reveal stories of the women and the punishment system to which they endured and railed against. Even more emotional is the performance The Proud and the Punished. Ticket proceeds help to fund the ongoing conservation of the site.
